Family Immigration Series

Conversations about the journeys of families to America come up often when people gather in the shul, or more recently on Zoom, and there has always been a lot of interest in hearing each other’s stories. Perhaps this is because the history of the shul itself is embedded in the immigration phenomenon of Jews from around the world. Each journey sounds like a miracle, and that today we are all in some way connected to the little shul in Nassau is itself remarkable.

So we are presenting a Series on Family Immigration Stories, gathering together some Sunday evenings on Zoom to listen to the adventures of each other and of our families. Fittingly we will begin the series during this cold winter. What better way to warm up than sharing these thrilling stories filled with courage and resilience, without which we would not be here today.

We begin Sunday, February 6th at 7 pm on Zoom. Sharon Cohen will present her family’s remarkable journeys beginning in England and Latvia, going to South Africa and Rhodesia now Zimbabwe, then Israel, and finally America. Norma Phillips will also present on her parents’ journeys, her father leaving Poland alone at age 14 to go to Cuba first and finally to America, and her mother leaving Ukraine at age 9 and arriving in New York as an undocumented immigrant

We are creating a series of presentations and are seeking presenters for this series. Many of our families have interesting stories about how their parents and/or grandparents came to this country. If you would be willing to share your family’s story please e-mail Norma Phillips at NOKOPHIL3@gmail.com.
